I have to say that living in Edmonton has its advantages- the biggest one being, the rockies! We often take it for granted living so close but trust me when I say, the mountains are ah-mazing. I always wonder why people come from all over the world to visit until I’m up there and I’m reminded how beautiful it really is!
We try and make it up to Banff or Jasper a few times a year and usually it’s to either hike or snowboard. Our most recent visit was the first time we really just went up to the mountains to relax and enjoy the scenery. We both decided to have an unplugged weekend and did a little exploring along the way. Ok, I may or may not have posted a few Instagram stories but for me, that’s disconnecting!
Before we get into the handful of fun activities Banff has to offer, let’s talk winter fashion. If you’re going to be visiting the mountains or if you live in a cooler climate the one thing you definitely need is a good coat. Trust me, it will be the best investment you’ve ever made!
What I love about the Shelburne Parka is that the hood is wire adjustable making it easy to shelter yourself from the elements. It definitely came in handy against the winds on our hike in Banff. The Shelburne is also stylish with it’s clean lines and sleek fit, making it the perfect balance between practicality and fashionability.
So you wanna visit Banff? There are millions of fun activities to do but here are some of my favourites…
Lake Louise
Whether you’re visiting in the summer or the winter you NEED to visit Lake Louise. It’s so beautiful and during the cooler months it’s truly transformed into a winter wonderland. There are plenty of things to do from walking around the lake, grabbing a drink in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, and even ice skating! Just be sure to dress warm and you’ll be set to take it all in!
Eddie Burger Bar
If you know me then you know that I looove a good burger! We’ve had our fair share of them over the years so I really feel like I can tell the good from the bad, and even the ugly. If you’re counting calories this place probably isn’t for you but if you’re in the mood for some comfort food it’s definitely the spot. You can build your own burgers or try one of their tasty creations- either way, it’s delish!
Johnston Canyon Ice Walk
This was the first time we visited Johnston Canyon during the winter and it was truly magical. All of the photos in today’s post were shot there just to give you a taste! The main attraction on this hike are the waterfalls which turn into amazing ice sculptures during the winter. Very gram worthy if I do say so myself.
We visited during the beginning of the season so they weren’t completely frozen but it was so cool to watch some of the water still flowing beneath the ice. If you have pets this hike is dog friendly and depending on the conditions you may want to rent crampons or ice cleats to use on the bottom your shoes.
wore my Canada Goose parka on this hike and although it’s a heavier coat style wise, I have to say I was comfortable and it felt lightweight. The amount of pockets it has were perfect for storing my mitts and of course, keeping my phone handy for the 12,000 photos I took of one waterfall- oops!
Upper Hot Springs
Going for a soak in the hot springs is always a must! You can definitely check it out during the day but I would suggest saving it for the evening as it’s the perfect way to end the day after any hiking or snowboarding adventure. We grabbed a bit at Eddie Burger Bar before going for a dip and let me tell you, carbs and the hot springs makes for one deadly combo. We literally passed out on the couch as soon as we got back to our place. So relaxing!
Wildhaus Pub
I couldn’t help but throw in another food spot for all my fellow comfort food lovers. Located behind the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Wildhaus is a German restaurant/pub nestled in the woods. Not only is the scenery beautiful but the food is amazing! We’ve visited the pub side of the restaurant a couple of times and their Eggs Benny on a bed of hashbrowns is SO good. Plus, they have a ton of great beers to choose from. Cheers!
